As New Jersey braces for an intense heat wave this week, it's more important than ever for parents to be on alert for signs of heat exhaustion in children. Kids are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses - they don’t sweat as efficiently as adults and may not always recognize when they’re getting overheated.

At Next Generation Pediatric Urgent Care, we want to help you keep your children safe and healthy through the summer heat.

What Is Heat Exhaustion?

Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to overheating and can happen after long exposure to high temperatures, especially with high humidity or strenuous activity. If not caught early, it can lead to heat stroke - a life-threatening emergency.

Common Signs of Heat Exhaustion in Kids:

  • Heavy sweating

  • Pale, cool, clammy skin

  • Weakness or fatigue

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Headache

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Fast, weak pulse

  • Muscle cramps

  • Irritability or confusion

How to Prevent It:

  • Dress children in lightweight, light-colored clothing

  • Keep them hydrated: encourage frequent sips of water even if they’re not thirsty

  • Avoid outdoor play during peak heat (typically 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

  • Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning

  • Never leave a child in a parked car, even for a few minutes

What to Do If You Suspect Heat Exhaustion:

  • Move your child to a cooler, shaded, or air-conditioned space

  • Offer cool water or an electrolyte drink (if they’re alert and able to drink)

  • Remove excess clothing and apply cool, damp cloths to their skin

  • Use a fan or cool mist to bring their body temperature down

  • If symptoms persist or worsen, seek medical attention immediately
